Medieval Assisi - Part 1 (Assisi, IT)

The town of Assisi sits on the top of one of the many rolling hills of the Umbria region of Italy.  There are wide panoramic views of the countryside no matter where you are in Assisi.  Since it is on the side and top of a hill, you are always walking either up or down.  There are countless stairs and steep streets to reach just about everything in town.  The town is a pristine medieval environment of narrow streets, stone buildings, terraced houses, and the feel of a thousand years ago (except, of course, for the cars!).  You need to experience Assisi for yourselves.  There is an extraordinary serenity which just pervades the entire town.  It is as though you could turn a corner and expect to run into St. Francis or St. Clare.  It is more than the hundreds of shops which hawk everything Franciscan.  It is tranquil and beautiful. I now understand why the town attracts thousands upon thousands of visitors and pilgrims.  The spirit of St. Francis truly lives here!

I have too many photos of the town to pack them into one posting, so I have decided to do two postings of them.  I will then follow with a posting of photos of the basilicas and churches of Assisi.  I hope that you experience something of what I have described from the photos which follow.

Church of San Pietro

Built by the Romans as the Temple to Minerva, it is now a church.

Ceiling fresco above a narrow side street.

Rocca Maggiore, a medieval castle at the very top of the hill.

The end of Part One....more to follow.
