Pope Francis I (The Vatican)

The white smoke begins too billow (with raindrops collecting on the lens of my camera).  [The photo is taken from the rooftop of the Jesuit Curia.]

By this time, you probably know more about Pope Francis I than I do.  However, I was there and saw the white smoke come from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel and watched Pope Francis I emerge on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.  It was a thrilling experience.  When the white smoke appeared, the Square erupted into thunderous cheers.  By the time the Pope appeared on the balcony St. Peter's Square was filled to capacity and beyond.  There were thousands of people anxiously waiting to learn the identity of the Pope, then he appeared and the crowds roared!  My vantage point was from a great distance inside the Bernini columns.  Here are a few photos of the Pope arriving onto the balcony.  He is the "white dot" on the balcony.  And, by the way, the Pope is a Jesuit!!

Thousands of people stream into St. Peter's Square.

The Swiss Guard marches in formation to the steps of the basilica.

Pope Francis I appears on the balcony!

God bless Pope Francis I!
